Audience Essay

The aim of our project was to create a horror teaser trailer. The name of our trailer is ‘Shinigami’, which is about teenagers who trespass on someone else’s property and they are then chased by the antagonist. Our trailer explores the themes Good vs Evil and team punishment. Our target audience are teenagers and young adults between the ages 16-24. We chose this age as they attend the cinemas the most and they are the main horror fans. There are a selection of reasons, as to why the audience would watch horror movies. This may be due to the thrill and excitement that they received, to divert their attention away from the real world, and to express their emotions. The two different types of audience theorists are the Mass Audience  theorist, who believe that everyone reacts to the media in the same way. Conventions are rules that allows genres to differentiate from each other. For example a convention of the Horror genre is having scary and eerie music, which helps create an atmosphere. By hearing this, the audience would instantly be able to establish the genre of the movie. However conventions can be followed of broken or followed. Some people may break conventions because they would like to experiment, or they may want to make a pointy about a certain situation. This would normally be a reflection on the society at that time. As the audience are watching something they would have expectations, of they are watching these expectations are met buy using conventions, of that certain genre that they are working in. For example if they are watching a horror movie they would expect to be scared or frightened, if that doesn't happen then their expectations have not been met.
