Religion is a dominant factor in horror movies, as they include themes such as Good vs Evil. Also including actions such as casting out demons are shown. Horror movies include objects that religious, e.g cross or a rosary, they also include satanic objects such as voodoo dolls and ouija boards.
Lights can symbolise life, death, peace transition and escape. For example in poltergeist “Don't go into the light” is said. Sometimes light can represent absence if comfort and relief, e.g sunlight. Other forms of lights such as candles, flashlights & lanterns are used when the character is in a dark secluded area, they are also used to spot the villain.
Colours can be use to symbolise, themes and powers, for example Red is normally associated with evil e.g the red queen from resident of evil. Black is normally associated with death and evil e.g The Woman in black. White is seen as pure, angelic and innocent and earth tones are associated with goo.
Weapons are normally phallic symbols, showing the masculine power and how men are superior to the women. For example someone slowing forcing a knife through someone else's body. This symbolises the sexual act of a man penetrating a woman.
Doors and windows have many symbolic meanings. One meaning for the window is being trapped, the person viewing from the window is normally frightened of the outside world or unable to go there. Where as the door normally symbolises freedom and opportunity. The doors and windows can also be used to create suspense, e.g leaving the door sloughing open or someone lurking in the window.
Tunnels and corridors are yonic, and are use repeatedly on a path to life or death.
Keys and locks symbolise secrets, confinement and hidden objects or places. For example in Don't Breath the old blond man, uses locks on majority of his doors and hides the keys, to ensure people don't find out the secret.
Dolls are normally used as a child toy, to represent innocent happiness and nurturing. However they tend to have human qualities and are normally possessed which results in them being able to interact with others.
Mask are used to hide identities, and disguise evil. For example in the movie Scream the mask were hiding the villains identities. In certain occasions the person may be a woman.
Mirrors and reflections in glass or water have many meanings. They are mainly used to reflect people's true identities, for example towards the end of insidious the fathers true identity was shown through a camera. Shattered mirrors connotes shattered lives.

Representation Theory Essay

A Horror Film is normally a representation of the society. Theorist such as Sarah Dobbs, Laura Mulvey and Charles Derry, tell us about the representation of the different aspects in horror films that is a representation or reflection of the society,during the time period the film was made. Laura Mulvey came up with theory of the Male Gaze. She speaks about the representation of women in film. She found that the cinema was mainly dominated by, Men and women were controlled by "The Male Gaze".The trailer my group and I created is called "Never Sleep again". I would say the concept of The Male Gaze is sometimes shown through the trailer, as the protagonist in my trailer is a female, who is tied up, in this case she is inferior, it is shown through the use of camera work.
