Week 2 - Homework prep Task 3.

The film uses different subgenres of horror; for example it uses splatter, monster, j horror psychological and slasher. J horror is used in an interesting way, as it shows he difference between the American system and the Japanese system, as it tries to convey that the Japanese people are able to resolve their problems and go back to being peaceful, whereas the Americans are unable to resolve their problems which makes the society corrupt.

The props and items were used in an interesting way as they had symbolic meanings, for example the items that all the characters picked up were symbolic of their death, as we were showed towards the end when the 2 characters were in the cube and the ballerina and the man holding the item they both picked up, symbolised the way that they were meant to die.

A convention that the film used in an interesting way is the characters. There were typical characters such as the prostitute, the virgin, the scholar, the fool and the athlete. In this case the slut was also the dumb blonde which was interesting as both roles are normally victimised and they end up being killed first, which was the case in the movie. This also leads to the theme of teen punishment, as the prostitute/dumb blonde was punished for her promiscuous ways and sexual nature. At the end of the movie, the characters and their roles were explained by the woman.

The use of lighting was used in an interesting way, as the lighting was low key, which is mainly used to set the scene and atmosphere of the movie.  Also the locations were used in an interesting way, as it was set in a cabin in the woods, which is an isolated place. Also the headquarters that the puppeteers were in, was also in a secluded area.

Audience Essay

The aim of our project was to create a horror teaser trailer. The name of our trailer is ‘Shinigami’, which is about teenagers who trespass on someone else’s property and they are then chased by the antagonist. Our trailer explores the themes Good vs Evil and team punishment. Our target audience are teenagers and young adults between the ages 16-24. We chose this age as they attend the cinemas the most and they are the main horror fans. There are a selection of reasons, as to why the audience would watch horror movies. This may be due to the thrill and excitement that they received, to divert their attention away from the real world, and to express their emotions. The two different types of audience theorists are the Mass Audience  theorist, who believe that everyone reacts to the media in the same way. And the Active Audience who argue that media texts are polysemic and everyone can interpret media text in different ways. The Hypodermic model supports the Mass Audience theorist,...

Representation Theory Essay

A Horror Film is normally a representation of the society. Theorist such as Sarah Dobbs, Laura Mulvey and Charles Derry, tell us about the representation of the different aspects in horror films that is a representation or reflection of the society, during the time period the film was made. Laura Mulvey came up with theory of the Male Gaze. She speaks about the representation of women in film. She found that the cinema was mainly dominated by, Men and women were controlled by "The Male Gaze".The trailer my group and I created is called "Never Sleep again". I would say the concept of The Male Gaze is sometimes shown through the trailer, as the protagonist in my trailer is a female, who is tied up, in this case she is inferior, it is shown through the use of camera work. As there is a high angle shot, which minimizes her, connoting that she is weak and powerless. However recently the media have began objectifying men, which is know as 'The Female Gaze'. Conno...
