Audience Essay

The aim of our project was to create a horror teaser trailer. The name of our trailer is ‘Shinigami’, which is about teenagers who trespass on someone else’s property and they are then chased by the antagonist. Our trailer explores the themes Good vs Evil and team punishment. Our target audience are teenagers and young adults between the ages 16-24. We chose this age as they attend the cinemas the most and they are the main horror fans. There are a selection of reasons, as to why the audience would watch horror movies. This may be due to the thrill and excitement that they received, to divert their attention away from the real world, and to express their emotions.

The two different types of audience theorists are the Mass Audience  theorist, who believe that everyone reacts to the media in the same way. And the Active Audience who argue that media texts are polysemic and everyone can interpret media text in different ways. The Hypodermic model supports the Mass Audience theorist, as its claims that media acts as a drug to the audience, causing them to become addicted to the media. Both the Hypodermic Model and Mass Audience are passive. This is can be used in horror movies, as horror movies are based on the current society in which they are set in. This would relate to my trailer ‘The Wickleshick’ as there are graphic scenes, also engages the audience as it is fast paced.

Mary Clover Jones introduces the idea of Desensitisation. Which is when the audience are exposed to violence over media and they becomes less sensitive to the violence the more they are exposed. This theory is both active and passive, as it shows that media does have an effect on people’s lives, but they have become used to being exposed to violence, so which also makes it passive. This relates to my trailer as there is a scene with a dead body, so it would have some sort of visceral pleasure in it, but they think wouldn’t much of it. The film saw includes graphical content but due to Desensitisation it would have much effect on the audience.

Blulmer and Katz introduce the uses and gratification theory this is when the audience use the media and it’s text to their advantage In order to meet their individual needs. Diversions/Escapism would be used for my trailer as the audience may watch and enjoy it. It would take attention away from their personal issues. The Scary movie would be used as a result of Escapism / Diversions because it is a Comedy/thriller movie and people would use it for humour, as well as the adrenaline and excitement they would receive from a horror movie.

Aristotle introduces the Catharsis Theory, which is an emotional effect caused by people who use social media to purge negative emotions such as fear or anger. This theory could be applied to my trailer, as people may watch it to purge anger because it is within the sub genre of slasher and it shows some graphic scenes.

Research & Planning Essay - Creativity

Throughout the 2 years I have studied media at A Levels, I have learnt the importance of the skills of research and  planning, as it allowed me to expand my knowledge and understanding, which enabled me to become more creative. After creating the tasks I was set to create, which was my AS music magazine and A2 horror teaser trailer, I have learnt that conventions are vital when creating products. The conventions allow the genre of your product to be established, as conventions are used to make the product recognisable to the audience. My AS preliminary task was unsuccessful. This is due to the fact that I was not given anytime to plan or research about the type of magazine I was being asked to create. I had to create the magazine based of the minimal knowledge I had, which included, the structure of the magazine. Due to the fact that I was unable to research, I had difficulties adding conventions. The genre of my work was a college magazine and I was unable to look at examples. I...

General definition, information  –  The BBFC and PEGI are the two organisations who certificate and rate media products. The BBFC are an non-government regulatory body to which films are submitted for classification based on their content. PEGI used descriptors that are placed on the back of the video games packaging. These descriptors explain the main reason behind why games have been given a particular age rating. Specific points/debates  However this role means that we have to place our trust in these organisations as we, the audience, rely upon them to make the decision of what we should and shouldn’t be subjected to in media products.  Problems are faced by these gatekeepers when it comes to media that they are unable to regulate.  Thesis statement  Although these regulatory bodies are in place there are problems with the systems that prevent them from being used as a means of protection, for the public, from the media.  For e...

Week 2 - Homework prep Task 3.

The film uses different subgenres of horror; for example it uses splatter, monster, j horror psychological and slasher. J horror is used in an interesting way, as it shows he difference between the American system and the Japanese system, as it tries to convey that the Japanese people are able to resolve their problems and go back to being peaceful, whereas the Americans are unable to resolve their problems which makes the society corrupt. The props and items were used in an interesting way as they had symbolic meanings, for example the items that all the characters picked up were symbolic of their death, as we were showed towards the end when the 2 characters were in the cube and the ballerina and the man holding the item they both picked up, symbolised the way that they were meant to die. A convention that the film used in an interesting way is the characters. There were typical characters such as the prostitute, the virgin, the scholar, the fool and the athlete. In this cas...
