Essay 2 - Narrative theory

The media trailer that my group and I, created is called 'Never sleep again' which is within the horror subgenre of supernatural. According to Theorist Bordwell and Thompson, Narrative is defined as " A chain of events in cause-effect relationship occurring in time"Narrative can be organised in a chronological order, as it allows the audience to understand the film. Todorov claims that narrative always has a structure of Equilibrium, Disequilibrium and Resolution. this is so the audience can have a full understanding of the product that they are viewing. However due to the fact that my product is a trailer, it has broken the rules, as it only includes the Equilibrium and Disequilibrium. if all of the three were included in the trailer, it would reveal too much about the the horror trailer. Also normally in horror trailers the scariest parts are normally shown, as that is what will get the audience to watch the movie, because the audience only want to watch a movie...

Teaser Trailer : The conjuring 2 remake

Horror Teaser Trailer analysis Horror trailers normally tend to start of slow, this is to  help the audience settle in, so that they don't expect what is about to come next. They do this by having slow eerie music at the beginning which helps the set the mood and atmosphere. Then after there is a climax which alerts the audience, making them unsettled. this is done by increasing the pace of the music and also adding jump scares to the trailer. Then after the trailer goes back to being slow, however the audience are still unsettled, as the are unaware of what is going to happen next.

Week 2: Homework Prep Task 4

Teen Punishment The film explores the theme of teen punishment, through the killing of the dumb blonde/prostitute. Due to her promiscuous ways and sexual nature the dumb blonde is killed off first in the movie, this is due to the religious aspects of horror movies, as it shows that she is killed for her sins. Also she dies as she is about to have sex with her boyfriend which is interesting, and gives a message to the audience. Jules Dancing The plan was for the virgin to live until the end, and for the other to die, as she is pure because she is still a virgin and they believe that she doesn’t need to be punished for any sins, as she has lived a good clean life. Gender & Sexuality The film shows the men of the group taking control and protecting the females, which reflects the patriarchal society that we live in as men are seen as superior and women are seen as inferior. Also the prostitute was punished for her sexual ways, whereas the men were not, also reflects the i...

Week 2 - Homework prep Task 3.

The film uses different subgenres of horror; for example it uses splatter, monster, j horror psychological and slasher. J horror is used in an interesting way, as it shows he difference between the American system and the Japanese system, as it tries to convey that the Japanese people are able to resolve their problems and go back to being peaceful, whereas the Americans are unable to resolve their problems which makes the society corrupt. The props and items were used in an interesting way as they had symbolic meanings, for example the items that all the characters picked up were symbolic of their death, as we were showed towards the end when the 2 characters were in the cube and the ballerina and the man holding the item they both picked up, symbolised the way that they were meant to die. A convention that the film used in an interesting way is the characters. There were typical characters such as the prostitute, the virgin, the scholar, the fool and the athlete. In this cas...
