Week 2: Homework Prep Task 4

Teen Punishment
The film explores the theme of teen punishment, through the killing of the dumb blonde/prostitute. Due to her promiscuous ways and sexual nature the dumb blonde is killed off first in the movie, this is due to the religious aspects of horror movies, as it shows that she is killed for her sins. Also she dies as she is about to have sex with her boyfriend which is interesting, and gives a message to the audience.
The plan was for the virgin to live until the end, and for the other to die, as she is pure because she is still a virgin and they believe that she doesn’t need to be punished for any sins, as she has lived a good clean life.

Gender & Sexuality
The film shows the men of the group taking control and protecting the females, which reflects the patriarchal society that we live in as men are seen as superior and women are seen as inferior. Also the prostitute was punished for her sexual ways, whereas the men were not, also reflects the inequality of the patriarchal society that we live in.
Yonic and Phallic Imagery

Phallic imagery was used a lot in the movie. One example is when the unicorn kills the man with its horn on its forehead, this is an example of phallic imagery as the man’s belly represents the vagina and the hon represents the penis, its symbolising sexual intercourse. Yonic imagery was also used in the movie. It was used when the van went through the cave in the begining, this is Yonic because the van enters and the cave represents the vagina, as the vagina takes thing in.

Audience Essay

The aim of our project was to create a horror teaser trailer. The name of our trailer is ‘Shinigami’, which is about teenagers who trespass on someone else’s property and they are then chased by the antagonist. Our trailer explores the themes Good vs Evil and team punishment. Our target audience are teenagers and young adults between the ages 16-24. We chose this age as they attend the cinemas the most and they are the main horror fans. There are a selection of reasons, as to why the audience would watch horror movies. This may be due to the thrill and excitement that they received, to divert their attention away from the real world, and to express their emotions. The two different types of audience theorists are the Mass Audience  theorist, who believe that everyone reacts to the media in the same way. And the Active Audience who argue that media texts are polysemic and everyone can interpret media text in different ways. The Hypodermic model supports the Mass Audience theorist,...

Representation Theory Essay

A Horror Film is normally a representation of the society. Theorist such as Sarah Dobbs, Laura Mulvey and Charles Derry, tell us about the representation of the different aspects in horror films that is a representation or reflection of the society, during the time period the film was made. Laura Mulvey came up with theory of the Male Gaze. She speaks about the representation of women in film. She found that the cinema was mainly dominated by, Men and women were controlled by "The Male Gaze".The trailer my group and I created is called "Never Sleep again". I would say the concept of The Male Gaze is sometimes shown through the trailer, as the protagonist in my trailer is a female, who is tied up, in this case she is inferior, it is shown through the use of camera work. As there is a high angle shot, which minimizes her, connoting that she is weak and powerless. However recently the media have began objectifying men, which is know as 'The Female Gaze'. Conno...
