Analysis of 3 existing horror trailers

The Devil Inside 2012 - Psychological
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWPGSbHlI2w

The Devil inside is a horror movie that is from the psychological sub-genre of horror . It has typical conventions of a horror movie, as it includes religion, and the typical theme of Good vs Evil, as the main character Isabella is trying to cast the evil spirit out of her mother. The movie also has typical editing skills of a horror movie as it uses fade and cut alot for the transitioning between scenes. The trailer is also based on a true story, as it states in the beginning that the recording is of a real phone call. The mise-en-scene used is effective, as the characters costume and make up suits the role that they are playing. for example The mother has cuts on her hand, and her costume is dirty and almost resembles rags, which suits her role, as she is in a mental hospital and she is possessed.

  Antichrist 2009 - Slasher
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4U5rdi9w-U

Antichrist is a splatter horror movie. However it is not a typical splatter movie because it doesn't include the typical blood, and guts that would be in most splatter movies e.g Saw. However it is typical in other aspects as it has they Good vs Evil theme and also includes religious conventions such as the music that played at the beginning was very religious.  It also included the clock sound that is used in most horror movies that is used to create suspense, as well as heavy breathing. The location is also isolated which is typical of a horror movie, as it is in the woods. The movie is very sexual as it shows sexual act at the end, and the villain is after the female victim, mainly due to the fact that there is a sexual attraction.

Martyr 2008

The movie Martyr works within the sub-genre of splatter. It
is extreme as it uses make up and prosthetics to show blood and injuries. There
is a use of sound bridge when the woman is screaming this is to add effect and
tension to the trailer. It is also to scare the audience so that they would concentrate
on the movie. There is a lot of cut between scenes used, this creates more of a
tension as the speed also increases with the cut from scene to scene make the
tension rise and also alerting the audience that something bad is going to
happen.

Media Language Essay

Horror films use established signs and codes in their conventions to signify a deeper meaning. For example written codes such as the masthead would connote the genre of the movie or product. In my horror trailer the weapons and stock characters, which are both parts of the mise-en-scene that comes under symbolic codes. Theorist Roland Barthes makes a distinction between Denotatin and Connotation, which allow people to introduce the content and then also go into detail. Symbolic codes help with the subtext of the trailer. As they are a form of NVC. for example in Insidious: The Last Key, the antagonists finger tips are keys, this is also used as a weapon. The use of the keys signifies secrecy or confinement. In our A2 media trailer the antagonist weapon, which are claws, have anphallic symbolism. This connotes the masculine power men have, also showing that men are the dominating sex. Technical codes such as the camera work allow the viewers to have a visual understanding of the tra...

General definition, information  –  The BBFC and PEGI are the two organisations who certificate and rate media products. The BBFC are an non-government regulatory body to which films are submitted for classification based on their content. PEGI used descriptors that are placed on the back of the video games packaging. These descriptors explain the main reason behind why games have been given a particular age rating. Specific points/debates  However this role means that we have to place our trust in these organisations as we, the audience, rely upon them to make the decision of what we should and shouldn’t be subjected to in media products.  Problems are faced by these gatekeepers when it comes to media that they are unable to regulate.  Thesis statement  Although these regulatory bodies are in place there are problems with the systems that prevent them from being used as a means of protection, for the public, from the media.  For e...
