Real Media Text Essay - Creativity

Conventions are rules that allows genres to differentiate from each other. For example a convention of the Horror genre is having scary and eerie music, which helps create an atmosphere. By hearing this, the audience would instantly be able to establish the genre of the movie. However conventions can be followed of broken or followed. Some people may break conventions because they would like to experiment, or they may want to make a pointy about a certain situation. This would normally be a reflection on the society at that time. As the audience are watching something they would have expectations, of they are watching these expectations are met buy using conventions, of that certain genre that they are working in. For example if they are watching a horror movie they would expect to be scared or frightened, if that doesn't happen then their expectations have not been met.

In AS, my brief was to create a music magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread, that was of a specific genre, to complete this successfully I had to identify conventions relating to the genre and include them in my magazine. The genre i chose was grime. I had to use certain conventions, which included masculine colours such as blue and grey. I also used someone who was from an ethnic minority background, which are mainly males. However i chose to use a female artist on my double page spread, and contents page. I did this as a reflection of the grime industry in our modern day culture, as female grime artist are becoming more popular. This is a result of the females roles changing, as they are becoming more independent and powerful.
I also had to successfully identify conventions relating to the use of images. The artist featured in my magazine had to pose ion a daunting and intimidating way, as that is how the majority of the grime artist are portrayed.

In my Year 13 film promotion exercise, I made a trailer and to do this i identified a number of key conventions such as stock characters, lighting, audio, locations and costume. To understand the true importance of the conventions I watched a lot of horror movies and trailers. Which then led my group and I to create a trailer within the sub genre of slasher. A convention of a slasher movie is to include a final girl, who is a virgin with dark hair, and dresses like a tom boy. At the end the final girl has a battle with the antagonist. We were inspired by cabin in the woods, as it has a similar concept to our horror trailer. We conformed to the conventions a lot, as there was no structure to our trailer. But the sequence was texture shots, disruption and then montage. For the montage the pace of the trailer was increased, as that is where the most action and the level of intensity is at its highest, we only used 2 types of transitions which were cut t black and fade to black, as we were creating a horror trailer.

As a creative director, my understanding and skills in using or breaking conventions of real media text  has developed. As I have been able to learn about the conventions used, however I have interpreted them in my own way, and based the of my own interpretations. For example during my trailer there were 4 stock characters: the jock, the slut, the hero and the final girl. Normally in slasher movies the slut dies first, but in our trailer the jock died first. We did this because we wanted to expand our creative skill by experimenting. We also used a manly shout, instead of a female scream.

In conclusion I have been able to understand that breaking down conventions used in Real Media Text is creative, as you are adding your own interpretation. Especially as genre is becoming more permeable is todays society, so breaking down conventions and subverting them, has become common in the modern day society that we are currently living in now.

"However conventions can be followed of broken or followed. Some people may break conventions because they would like to experiment, or they may want to make a pointy about a certain situation."
HOW does this apply to your own work though and your development in doing this - you need to focus everything you write on how this is present in your own productions.

"As the audience are watching something they would have expectations, of they are watching these expectations are met buy using conventions, of that certain genre that they are working in. For example if they are watching a horror movie they would expect to be scared or frightened, if that doesn't happen then their expectations have not been met."
Again, this must be about your own work or it is wasted text and time.

"grime. I had to use certain conventions, which included masculine colours such as blue and grey. I also used someone who was from an ethnic minority background, which are mainly males."
ANALYSIS? WHY is this a convention what semiotic does it mean?
WHICH magazines did you look at/influence you (we did this in class)

"This is a result of the females roles changing, as they are becoming more independent and powerful.
I also had to successfully identify conventions relating to the use of images. The artist featured in my magazine had to pose ion a daunting and intimidating way, as that is how the majority of the grime artist are portrayed." Good - so what has been the impact on Creativity here?
HOW successful did your magazine end up as a consequence (strengths and weaknesses)

"key conventions such as stock characters, lighting, audio, locations and costume. To understand the true importance of the conventions I watched a lot of horror movies and trailers. " WHICH RMTs - name the most influential - Reinventing the old??????

" A convention of a slasher movie is to include a final girl, who is a virgin with dark hair, and dresses like a tom boy. At the end the final girl has a battle with the antagonist." Did you do this in your trailer in your MES decision and HOW?

Audience Essay

The aim of our project was to create a horror teaser trailer. The name of our trailer is ‘Shinigami’, which is about teenagers who trespass on someone else’s property and they are then chased by the antagonist. Our trailer explores the themes Good vs Evil and team punishment. Our target audience are teenagers and young adults between the ages 16-24. We chose this age as they attend the cinemas the most and they are the main horror fans. There are a selection of reasons, as to why the audience would watch horror movies. This may be due to the thrill and excitement that they received, to divert their attention away from the real world, and to express their emotions. The two different types of audience theorists are the Mass Audience  theorist, who believe that everyone reacts to the media in the same way. And the Active Audience who argue that media texts are polysemic and everyone can interpret media text in different ways. The Hypodermic model supports the Mass Audience theorist,...

Media Language Essay

Horror films use established signs and codes in their conventions to signify a deeper meaning. For example written codes such as the masthead would connote the genre of the movie or product. In my horror trailer the weapons and stock characters, which are both parts of the mise-en-scene that comes under symbolic codes. Theorist Roland Barthes makes a distinction between Denotatin and Connotation, which allow people to introduce the content and then also go into detail. Symbolic codes help with the subtext of the trailer. As they are a form of NVC. for example in Insidious: The Last Key, the antagonists finger tips are keys, this is also used as a weapon. The use of the keys signifies secrecy or confinement. In our A2 media trailer the antagonist weapon, which are claws, have anphallic symbolism. This connotes the masculine power men have, also showing that men are the dominating sex. Technical codes such as the camera work allow the viewers to have a visual understanding of the tra...
